My life while the world spins madly on...

Thoughts arising while working as a scientist or just randomly spinning from my brain.

I don't give a damn, I'm happy as a clam, nobody knows me at all

[This and the section title borrowed from the Weepies - great lyrics.]

The Opera: Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer

Went to see the Flying Dutchman yesterday at the Deutsch Oper am Rhein in Duesseldorf. Ddorf, that is where you drive into a construction site to let the ambulance pass, which is coming up from behind but getting blocked by the big cars all time and then when it finally passed by, you can't get back on the road because the Mercedes cars are right behind the ambulance and wont let you in.

Anyway, the opera was nice, not as good as Xerxes this winter, but totally different and thus hard to compare anyway. Good to see different stuff to get into it. Actually I found that there are some pretty good Operas on youtube that one can have running in the background when working - essentially like football or rugby games.

Oh, and the All Blacks won today. Would have liked to see the French win as well though. Quite divided as usual when these two nations play, but one win would have been nice for the French to end the series. A nice little place in Paris where I had lunch on my way to Roscoff...

Pink - Eagles - Cash

To my sister's complete embarrassment: I like the new Pink album. It has quite a number of really cool songs. For paper writing now, I will switch to The Eagles and then maybe some Johnny Cash. Hoping that is not embarrassing es well... :D

Watched "The Life of P" and Richard Parker over the weekend: what an amazing story and film (even non-3D). Never actually came to read the book, but think I should take along to vacations this summer.

Mutation-Driven Evolution and Punctuated Equilibrium

Started reading a brand new book by Nei: "Mutation-Driven Evolution". So far I like it. Fits with what I think about evolution. Eager to see how the author develops the argument...

Also bought this one. Actually I never really believed in punctuated equilibrium, but one has to read all the arguments and consider them.

It's a bit bigger though, this book. Now wondering if that says something about the validity of the presented theories. Evolution happens every day and everywhere!
